Indeed you were partially correct.  I-80 passes over (actually under) Donner Pass Road which is the original trail.  You need to take an exit to actually get onto Donner Pass Road which is well worth the summit.  Unbelievable views!

I'd bet you would have taken the same route.  It turned out to be the quickest/shortest route between Sacramento and Reno (well most of my route, since I came from Carson City).

We'll have to make it out there and do some off the beaten path exploring!  So far, as you can probably tell, I'm having a blast!!</description>

When I was planing to fly into SF or SAC to go to reno last year, I could swear I would have to to make the same drive your taking.

Oh well, not the first time I would have been wrong!
