Award winning applications of marketing and technology in the auction industry
Yesterday, was auction day in Sacramento. I had the opportunity to work with a new auction company but with an auctioneer of whom I am very familiar. It made for a fun day. As always, the day was fun and varied. After the auction, we headed out for dinner before my redeye flight which was a nice way to pass the time.
However, it did little to prepare me for my 12 hours (clock and 10 actual) spent in airports or airplanes. My flight left Sacramento at 12:30am and arrived in Dallas/Ft Worth at 5:35 this morning. From there I had a layover until 7:25 before landing in Mpls at 10 this morning. I don’t often get involved in redeye flights. However, in this instance I did it to try and get back to the office today. Let’s just say, that plan didn’t work. I barely slept on the plane, and the sleep I did get was fairly restless. Needless to say, I would have been better off flying home this morning because I’ve basically slept my day away, and I’m afraid that I’m about ready to screw up my nights and days.
Redeye flights are nice. However, I’m beginning to wonder what they accomplish. Really, you’re either taking one to save money (not a factor in this instance for me) or to save time (my rationale this flight). It turns out, my attempt to save time cost me the same amount of time as if I had flown early this morning. In fact, I’d argue that I lost time because of my lack of sleep. I’m completely exhausted - not my idea of a fun time.

Red eye flights are a waste of time, unless you have the impressive ability to sleep anywhere and you are able to be a participant in an empty flight and score an entire row to yourself. Then, you can stretch out and make a nest. On the other hand, if your flight is full and you are cursed enough to have to endure the tortures of a full tourist/economy class, then you might want to think about a day flight. It’s luxurious, being offered a complementary non-alcoholic beverage and a snack of questionable origin (something with lots of preservatives that you can usually find the breakroom of a local Jiffy Lube) and then the 5′6″ jerk in front of you reclines his seat into the knees on your 6′1″ frame. Good times, good times.
So when is your next trip? Betcha can’t wait!

JRH,
I’m learning the hard way that red eyes are a waste of time. I am able to sleep on planes. However, it’s always a restless half sleep rather than a full deep sleep.
All my flights this week were full. However, I never had anyone in the middle seat, and I always had the window seat. It was nice! Although, for some reason, the “seat mates” on the way out were much better than those on the way back.

DPE,
a. SF would not have been bad except for the drive over to Carson City. Instead I just flew into Reno and out of Sacramento. It was easier from a travel standpoint.
b. Agreed, I think you can sleep at any point. Case in point, the countless times when headed out to the clubs with you in the passenger seat of a moving car. Although, you could argue the same about me - big wheels anyone??
c. Jag bomb - now that doesn’t sound all that bad - but it was 4:55AM when you asked - I was just getting out of bed. You couldn’t possibly have been still out?! On a Thursday night? Sounds like trouble!

or you could just suck it up and deal with it. things could always be worse…

LAH,
I guess that is one option. Thanks for the tip!

Why suck it up when you can change how you do things?
If I don’t have a car…. should I suck it up and walk… or buy a car?

If I’ve got the money, I’m buying a car, and not walking!

If the action is repetitive and tiring enough, then you should probably change. Common sense can tell you that; Doctor Phil should not have to knock down your door and have a “tough love” talk with you to change your habits.
BUT if it is a just a one time only thing or every-so-often event, then it is probably just the best to “suck it up” and deal with it.

Agreed, as with all things in life, there is a time for sucking it up and a time for habit changes.
On a related, side note, I’m always amazed at shows like Dr. Phil. What ever happened to good old common sense? Although, it’s sometimes easy to miss the big picture and need the “tough love” talk, I’ve never understood some of the individuals on the show and how oblivious they are to the world around them.
