Sunday evening, I trekked down to Rochester to catch a 6 p.m. flight. I was headed to Rutland, VT and Wilson, NC for auctions on Monday and Tuesday. It was a smooth flight in the Pilatus PC-12. With just over a 4-hour flight, we hooked up the in-car DVD players and had movie night. We knocked out Murder at 1600 in route to Vermont, Air Force One in route to North Carolina, and Lethal Weapon 3 on the return trip.
I’ve got to say Vermont was cozy. The community was filled with Victorian homes that were well maintained, and Rutland (population 17,000 and the second largest city in the state) was nestled in the mountains (read: large forested hills) in river valleys. The pace of life was definitely slower – checking into the hotel with 8 reservations took nearly an hour; the waitress at Denny’s didn’t bring our beverages until she delivered our food; and a buyer at the auction commented on how they don’t need/use time clocks in Vermont. It was a surreal experience to say the least.
North Carolina was more normal. Wilson seemed to be a well established community with nearly everything a person could want. Many of the homes were of a Victorian style but were located on large, lush, green, manicured lawns. It seemed to be a community where I could live. The only negative, if you call it a negative, was that in all our driving around, we didn’t see one bar or liquor store. I’m guessing it may have been a dry community. That’s not a total killer, but it would definitely cut into my social life. Or, perhaps change my social life.
I don’t have any trips planned for the near future. Although in June, I’m headed to Milwaukee for some Twins v. Brewers baseball action, and New York for an auction. This morning, I did turn down a trip to Atlanta scheduled for next week because of a scheduling conflict. Hopefully, I get another chance to get to Atlanta. I’ve always thought that might be a fun trip.
