Last night, I had an urge to eat at one of my favorite restaurants.  The only catch is that it’s not your typical restaurant.  Nope, it’s the Trucker’s Inn truck stop in Sauk Centre.  I was chatting with a friend tonight, as I was driving over to grab dinner.  I explained that the truck stop is definitely not a date place, or a place you take someone that you’re trying to impress.  However, I explained, it’s a place you take someone that appreciates true American classics served up truck stop style.  There is a certain expectation I have of truck stop food.  I almost always know it’s going to be good food, served fast and in large portions for a reasonable price.  Along with the great food, you also get the distinct bonus of excellent people watching.

Eating at the truck stop in Sauk Centre is no different and offers several advantages to me.

  1. As a single guy, I often venture out and eat alone.  In the truck stop, I’m one of many individuals eating alone.
  2. The people watching is some of the best in the area.  You’d be amazed at the wide variety of individuals that stop to eat at a truck stop.  From truckers, to young couples, to old couples to entire families, they’re all there.  Not to mention, they range from the dirtiest looking individuals to the clean cut individuals.  I prefer to sit near the dirtier individuals (no, not to fit in) so as to catch some entertaining conversation.
  3. The food is very good, always hot, and served very quickly.  I’ve very rarely need to wait more than five or ten minutes for my main meal.  The service is what one might expect at a truck stop, a bit on the short side, but always there when you need something.
  4. The food is also very filling and large portioned.  I’m not sure you can go away hungry.  Tonight for just under $9.00, I went away with salad bar, soup, American fries, toast and chicken fried steak plus a chocolate milk.  For those of you scoring at home, it was completely against my diet, and I likely gained five pounds just eating there.  Nevertheless, it was very delicious and well worth the five pounds!

Someday, I figure I’ll find a date that wants to traverse to the truck stop for dinner without requiring something in exchange.  In the past, I’ve taken some of my friends and a few ex-girlfriends.  Overall, not many women I’ve taken there have been overly impressed with my restaurant choice despite the advantages I’ve described.  Oh well, I’ll just keep going by myself until I find the right girl that’s willing to experience truck stop dining on a somewhat regular basis.
